The 2013 Alabama Dance Festival

The Alabama Dance Festival on January 18 - 27 is proud to present Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion and Dr. Thomas DeFrantz as artists-in-residence for the Festival’s commemoration and tribute to the 50th anniversary of the important civil rights events of 1963. As an art form, dance offers a personal and insightful lens through which to view and discuss past and current issues surrounding civil and human rights for everyone.

The Ultimate Dance Experience

Immerse yourself in dance by starting on January 19 with Dance Across Birmingham – a day of free dance classes designed for beginners of all ages and a free Birmingham Dance Showcase performance featuring a variety of Birmingham dance companies. Purchase a discounted weekend pass for Festival performances on January 25 – 27, featuring guest company, Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion, on January 25 and the inaugural New Works Concert on January 26. Complete your dance experience with a fantastic variety of regional dance companies at the Alabama Dance Showcase on January 27!

 

Dance for Schools

Classroom teachers – we’ve planned some great activities for you and your students! Teachers will want to start on January 18 with a free Teacher Workshop "Moving to Learn," where you will receive movement-based arts integration tools and materials. Put this information to use right away to prepare your students for the Festival’s free school matinee performances presented by our guest company Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion on January 24 and 25. Free dance classes are also available for students and teachers at the Festival’s community event, Dance Across Birmingham on January 19. For Professional and Pre-Professional Dancers

Professional/college and pre-professional dancers (grades 6 – 12) can register for weekend packages that include master classes and performance tickets for January 25 – 27. Online registration is now open! Organizations may earn 1 free registration for every 10 paid package registrations of equal or lesser value. All performers must meet registration requirements. Please check with your director or email rosemary@alabamadancecouncil.org.

Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion presents The Radio Show, sponsored by the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, on January 24 and Pavement on January 25 at the Alabama School of Fine Arts' new Dorothy Jemison Day Theater.

 

Dr. Thomas DeFrantz presents his performance lecture "Performing Black" on January 26 at the Dorothy Jemison Day Theater.

 

The Alabama Dance Festival presents two free matinee performances for schools on January 24 and 25, 10:00 am at the Alabama School of FIne Arts' Dorothy Jemison Day Theater.

The "Moving to Learn" workshop offers K-12 classroom teachers a free professional development opportunity on January 18, 8:30 am-3:30 pm at Children's Dance Foundation.

Dance Across Birmingham offers free community classes for all ages on January 19 at the BJCC. 

The Alabama Dance Festival offers a variety of master classes for professional, college and pre-professional dancers on January 25-27.
